SONG STORY: GHOST

In Matthew 14, we read the story of Peter being called out on the waters with Jesus. I’ve sometimes had trouble connecting to this story. It sounds so mystical. I’ve never walked on water. I’ve never witnessed anyone else walking on water either. It can sometimes read like a fairytale, but when I think about this story from Peter’s vantage point, it starts to sound familiar. One minute you know exactly what you’re doing: you’re riding in a boat from one place to another. Or maybe you’re driving to work. You do it nearly every day of your life. Maybe you’re studying for a test or balancing your checkbook or taking your kids to school. Then suddenly, something unexpected hits us—a circumstance we didn’t plan for or an uneasy feeling that God is calling us to change in some way. We’ve all experienced the feeling of our comfort and safety being disrupted. It feels scary and uncertain and sometimes very painful.

One of the ways God demonstrates His goodness is by not letting us get comfortable with our fears. He doesn’t call us to a life in the boat—a life of mediocrity. God calls us to a life of radical love. It’s a love that doesn’t tolerate fear but hears and obeys the voice of God despite what our emotions might tell us. It trusts that God is the peace that hovers just above the chaos. One word from Him has the power to restore abundance and order and goodness to our lives. Because He never gives up on us and because His ways are higher than this world, we always have a reason to be hopeful.

Whether you’re in a season of calm right now or a season of uncertainty, we hope this song reminds you of the source of your peace. Circumstances can change in an instant, but God’s love for you never fails. Trust in Him! Don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make your steps secure. After all, even water and wind submit to His voice. Your storm is no match for our Maker.
