WATER BAPTISM

WHAT IS WATER BAPTISM?

When we follow Jesus into water baptism, we are baptized in faith in what Jesus has accomplished, putting on or taking on ourselves Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Great power is released through the Holy Spirit to walk in this supernatural life He has provided—free from the power of sin and death. The act of water baptism also demonstrates to us and those around us the forgiveness of sins and good conscience towards God that we receive by faith.

Through this act we are identifying with Jesus and are one with Him in His death and resurrection and follow in His footsteps

WHY DO BELIEVERS GET WATER BAPTIZED?

1) Jesus commanded it.

And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age’.” Matthew 28:18-20 (HCSB)

“’Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?’ So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ…” Acts 10:47-48 (NRSV)

2) Jesus was baptized and we as believers follow Him.

“And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.  And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased’.” Matthew 3:16-17 (NRSV)

3) We are baptized in faith in what Jesus has accomplished, putting on Jesus’ death and resurrection, and great power is released through the Holy Spirit to walk in this supernatural life He has provided—free from the power of sin and death.

“As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Galatians 3:27 (NRSV)

Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4 (NRSV)

4) The act of water baptism demonstrates to us and those around us the forgiveness of sins and good conscience towards God that we receive by faith.

Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 3:21 (HCSB)

5) Through it we are identifying with Jesus and are one with Him in His death and resurrection and follow in His footsteps.

“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?  Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:3-4 (NRSV)
