WHAT IS “THE FALL OF MAN?”

AKA SIN

Mankind was originally created in the image of God. When mankind fell, we fell from our original value, or image of God. God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created themGod blessed them… God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good…” (Genesis 1:27-28,31 NASB).

There is more to the image of God than just appearance. The image of God deals with the essence or nature and character of who God is. God is not only spirit, but the Bible tells us that He is love, holy, pure, faithful, and all the attributes that make God, God. By choice, mankind fell from His original value or image of God, by turning against God. Instead of being loving, he became hateful. Instead of being selfless, he became selfish, and so on.

The only hope of the redemption of mankind is in Jesus Christ, the Son of God who gave up his sinless life, to take on the punishment of sin, so that mankind could be redeemed, set free from the bondage of sin and its effects, and be restored to God’s image and reconnected with God-or turned back towards God.

Genesis 3:1-7 gives the account of when mankind fell into sin and from the image of God. This is when man chose to distrust God and submit to the enemy—Satan. This gave Satan authority over man and what man had dominion over. Through this man took on the nature of Satan which was in direct opposition to God’s nature. This is the fall.

“Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?” Romans 6:16 (NASB).

However, there is hope in Jesus Christ. God has saved us from the fall through freely and selflessly giving up His own life—demonstrating His own nature that we were designed to become like.

“…Adam is a type of Him (Christ) who was to come. But the free gift [of God] is not like the trespass. For if many died by one man’s trespass, much more did God’s grace and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many.” Romans 5:14-15 (AMP).
