SALVATION

WHAT IS “BORN AGAIN?”

When you became “Born Again” or “Saved,” you believed in your heart that Jesus is the Son of God. You admitted that you needed a Savior from your sinful life and deeds and decided that Jesus is your Lord (master, leader) and Savior. You acknowledged that this is possible through His saving work on the cross and resurrection. You confessed this Truth with your mouth, and you became:

Saved by your Savior, Jesus Christ. (Titus 3:5)

Redeemed with a clean conscious and identity. (1 John 1:9)

Born of God: a child of God. (John 1:12-13)

Born again of God’s Spirit. (John 3:5-6)

You are now a new creation. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

The old fleshly life and nature has been cut away or removed from you by faith in God. (Colossians 2:11)

HOW DO I BECOME "SAVED"?

Picture a person at a fork in the road. The way that they have been travelling, and the way that is available for them to continue to travel is labeled, “sin.” However, there is another way that is available, and this way is labeled, “righteous.” The old way leads to death, and the new way leads to life. When the identity or label over your life is “sin,” the path of your life and what is working in you is death. When the identity and label over your life becomes “righteous,” the path of your life and what is working in you is now life.

The Bible says,

“…that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” Romans 10:9-10 (HCSB)

To become “born again” or “saved” you are saying that you believe in your heart that Jesus is the Son of God. You are acknowledging that you need a Savior from your sinful life and deeds and that you are choosing to make Jesus the Lord (master, leader) and Savior of your life. You choose to receive His saving work as He died on a cross and rose again for you. By confessing this belief you are welcomed into the family of God and are now what the Bible calls, “a new creation” in Him.

“When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions…” Colossians 2:13 (NASB)

This means when your natural, fleshly nature was still very much a part of you. When you were still in covenant or agreement or attachment with your flesh nature—you were DEAD. Through your agreement with God by faith and confessing with your mouth, you were “Born Again” of the Spirit of God—you were made a new spiritual creation whose path is life, and who no longer identifies or can be identified with the old fleshly nature.

That old way, history, and identity has been removed from you, forever!

Jesus has made us alive together in Him, through crucifying the old flesh nature—forgiving our sins—and redeeming us into our new spiritual nature.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE "BORN AGAIN" OR "SAVED"?

When you became “Born Again” or “Saved” through believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth that Jesus is your Savior, you became:

  • Saved by your Savior Jesus Christ

He saved us—not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration [recreated] and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Titus 3:5 (HCSB)

  • Redeemed with a clean conscience and identity—free from your old ways and identity

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (HCSB)

  • Born of God—a child of God

But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12-13 (HCSB)

“for you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26

  • A child of God who is Spirit

“Jesus answered, “I assure you: Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:5-6 (HCSB)

  • You are now a new creation. Not one trapped by the life of the natural fleshly body, but one given freedom by the life of the Spirit.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (HCSB)

  • The old fleshly life and nature has been cut away by faith in this Truth.

In him also you were circumcised with a spiritual circumcision, by putting off the body of the flesh in the circumcision of Christ…” Colossians 2:11 (NRSV)

HOW DOES BEING "BORN AGAIN" CHANGE MY LIFE?

This changes everything!!! Not only is it the assurance or promise of your eternal life, removing all fear of death that holds humankind captive, but it is also your assurance in this life of your identity as a treasured child of God.

Why is this important? It is freedom! Freedom to become who you were created to be, freedom from fear, freedom to have relationship and to know your loving Father God, and the freedom to grow and be transformed into the image of your Awesome Father! It is the promise that you will grow from Glory to Glory, as you become more like your heavenly, good Father. He is your Father, and you are His treasured child! You can go close to Him without holding back!

“…let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.” Hebrews 10:22 (HCSB)

When we become “Born Again” of God, we are now at peace with God, and with His Kingdom. We are spirit born of His spirit, and a part of His Spiritual Kingdom, which is something we could not understand with our natural, fleshly minds. We belong to God and to His Kingdom, and our life now becomes His, as we are led by His Spirit and recognize Jesus as Lord of our lives.

“Jesus replied, ‘I assure you: Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God’.” John 3:3 (HCSB)

“But the unbeliever does not welcome what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it since it is evaluated spiritually.” 1 Corinthians 2:14 (HCSB)

“You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God lives in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.” Romans 8:9 (HCSB)

“Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own…” 1 Corinthians 6:19 (HCSB)

As a “Born Again” believer, we are not only freed from the record of sin, the effects of sin, and the identity of sin, but we are also freed from the power and captivity to sin. Our lives can now be His and glorify Him by the power of His Spirit within us!

We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him.” Romans 6:6-8 (NLT)
